Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai: TIFR conducts a Visiting Students Research Programme (VSRP) annually for students interested in being a part of world class research work. This program is highly competitive and more details about the application process and selection details can be found here. The notification comes in the month of January every year.
National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore: NCBS offers training opportunities to science and engineering students who are interested in working under the supervision of scientists and faculties at the Institute. Interested students can email professors whose research interests aligns with theirs and enquire about training positions and other vacancies in their labs. Many students also do their final year semester projects at NCBS.
The Three National Science Academies ( Indian National Science Academy (INSA) – New Delhi, Indian National Academy of Science (NAS) – Allahabad and, The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) – Bangalore): The Three National Science Academies together offer a two-month summer fellowship for students interested in pursuing world-class research with scientists associated with these academies. Applications for the 2018 summer fellowships program will be announced in the month of September-October.
Once selected for this fellowship, each student gets placed in the lab of a scientist who is associated with the three Academies. The scientists are usually from prestigious institutions such as IISc, IITs, IGIB, ICGEB, NCCS etc.
Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore: Students interested in pursuing summer internships at the IISc can email professors whose research interests aligns with theirs and enquire about open positions in their lab. Many students have also been placed at the IISc for summer training and internships programmes through the two-month summer fellowship offered by the three national science academies. Sometimes, many departments within IISc post summer internship opportunities in their departmental website.
Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Gurgaon: RCB is inviting applications for their 6-months summer training programme without stipend. Students from 4 year courses/PG in Sciences are invited to carry out their project work which will count towards the partial fulfillment of their degree. The project work can be extended to 1-year of duration depending on vacancies available.
National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi: NII provides opportunities for students who wish to do their project work under the supervision of the scientists at the Institute. Students who are pursuing Masters degree (e.g. MSc, MVSc, MTech, integrated masters students in their 4th year etc.) may apply. Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore: Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore: JNCASR conducts an annual summer research fellowships program of two months duration for BTech, BSc and MSc students. In total, 120 fellowships are awarded each year. Application details can be found here.
Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram: RGCB offers plenty of paid summer training programs, skills development workshops, and training courses. For a list of all the training programs offered by RGCB, please refer to this link here.
Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi: IGIB provides training to students with good academic record as well as interest and aptitude to work at IGIB for partial fulfillment of their degree programme i.e M.Sc./B.Tech/M.Tech and other professional courses.
- Two-months training for the students preferably with training fellowships from national academies such as JNCASR, INSA, IASc etc. This program is available only during the summer months (May-June or June -July) The applications for summer training will be entertained between 1st February and 28th February.

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad: CCMB conducts a summer training program (6 weeks duration from May – June) for students who are in their 1st year of MSc or 6th semester of BTech or 8th semester of integrated B.Tech-M.Tech program. M. Tech. students are not eligible. Computer science students with a flair for biology may also apply. CCMB also offers project dissertation programs for Biotech and Life Sciences students. National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Haryana: Students who are interested in doing their summer training at NBRC must be selected through the summer fellowship of the 3 National Science Academies (IAS, INSA, NAS). For more details, please refer to this link.
ICAR – National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology (NRCPB): NRCPB offers project-based training to BTech and MSc/MTech students. Their deadline usually falls in the month of June every year, keep checking here.
Instem, Bangalore: If you want to work on stem cell research, then this internship might be exactly what you are looking for. Instem accepts MSc and BTech students to do their final year projects and short term summer projects. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT): The IITs and NITs routinely conduct summer research fellowships that are of 2 to 3 months of duration. Since the IITs are recognized world over, doing internships here will make a huge difference to one’s career.

- IIT Madras: Their summer fellowship for the year 2018 is yet to open in January 2018. But the information and deadline for the 2018 program will be updated here.
- IIT Roorkee: IIT Roorkee invites applications from students of all engineering disciplines (including Biotechnology) for their two-month summer internship. Application deadline usually falls in the month of November.
- IIT Gandhinagar: IIT Gandhinagar offers a summer internship program every year for BTech and MTech students from all over India. Their application deadline falls in the month of March. Please refer here for more information.
- IIT Ropar: IIT Ropar offers two-month summer internships every year for undergraduate students from any institute across India. For more details, please visit this link.
- IIT Guwahati: IIT Guwahati’s Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering offers summer internships for biotech undergraduate students for a maximum of 10 weeks from May to July. For more details, please refer to this link.
- IIT Bhubaneswar: IIT Bhubaneswar offers a winter and summer internships for students from across the country for a maximum period of 8 weeks. For more details, please refer here.
- NIT Rourkela: Every year NIT Rourkela offers 50 paid internships to students across the country. The Internship period will be for 2 months. Usually the internships are offered during summer. Selected candidates will get financial assistantship.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER): IISER Pune conducts a 4-8 week summer student program for students in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of BSc/BTech and 1st year of MSc or MTech. The application process for 2018 will commence during Jan-Feb 2018. For more details click here.

Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), New Delhi: BCIL organizes an annual Biotech Industrial Training Programme (BITP) for students who have completed their degree in Biotechnology and related fields. Students with BE, BTech, MSc and MTech degrees are eligible to apply. The aim of this training program is to help students cultivate the required skill sets for finding jobs in the biotech sector. The training period is for 6 months and students are paid a stipend of Rs. 10,000 per month. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Center For Biomedical Research, Delhi: ACBR conducts an annual Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) of 14 weeks duration in the newly emerging techniques of Biotechnology. SURP trainees undergo both theoretical and analytical training in biomedical sciences and biotechnology. Applications for training under SURP must be sent to the Director of ACBR on or before 15th May every year. ACBR also accepts students who are selected via the three national science academies, Indian National Science Academy New Delhi, Indian National Academy of Science, Allahabad and, The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, two-month summer fellowship.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi: The School of Life Sciences, JNU organizes an annual summer school program of 2 months duration. Applications are invited from students pursuing graduate or postgraduate studies in any branch of science and technology (BSc, MSc, BTech, BE, MBBS, MTech etc).
CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), Kolkata: IICB conducts annual summer training and project/dissertation work programs for postgraduate students (B.Tech students are not eligible to apply) studying in a recognized institution in India with at least 60% and above marks since high school. All applications must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the commencement of the training. Students looking for short term summer trainee positions must apply through government sponsored programs such as KVPY, INSPIRE, INSA/IAS etc. Direct applications to IICB are not entertained.
National Centre For Cell Science (NCCS), Pune: NCCS does not admit students directly for the summer Training Programme. However, candidates selected as Summer Research Fellows (SRF) by Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), are admitted for 2 months training. Students who are interested in Summer Training at NCCS may apply directly to Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) SRF Program with preference indicated for NCCS. Students are encouraged to apply for suitable programmes when our advertisement appears on the website.
